… mainly because I’m fast regarding them as the most fatuous organisation the country is proud to hold dear.
Answer me a question, if you will. Under which part of the public service remit of the British Broadcasting Corporation is http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8351883.stm.
If you haven’t read the Charter, it’s a rip-roaring read. Here are the “public purposes” of the BBC. It’s basically what every penny they spend has to adhere to. It’s what they exist for.
Let’s guess which one this particular “persecution of [a] one-eyed man” (via @bengoldacre) can be shoehorned into.
(a) sustaining citizenship and civil society; (b) promoting education and learning; (c) stimulating creativity and cultural excellence; (d) representing the UK, its nations, regions and communities; (e) bringing the UK to the world and the world to the UK; (f) in promoting its other purposes, helping to deliver to the public the benefit of emerging communications technologies and services and, in addition, taking a leading role in the switchover to digital television.
Well… it’s none of those in my opinion. It even goes against the second part of (c). This kind of nonsense should be reserved for the tabloid press and their bear-baiting, herd-amassing, baying bile. The BBC needs to grow up – stop trying to compete with commercial broadcasters and do your job. It’s in your Charter, if you’re wondering what that is.
